Welcome to our Health Promoting Website! Keep up to date with all our activities and initiatives. We want our kids and staff to be HAPPY, ACTIVE and HEALTHY :)
Kind hands, kind words & kind feet
In S.P.H.E we explored how we can be kinder to one another #BE KIND. We discussed how through our actions as well as our words we can reach out and help others.
Therapy Through Art
Some pupils made beautiful mandalas today .The idea is to engage the brain in a logical activity ( in this case, making a pattern) thereby being able to tap into the sub- conscious mind and explore what lurks there!! But beware ...you might be in for a big surprise :) The pupils really enjoyed the soothing effect of this activity.
Water Safety
It's that time of year when we need to be conscious about water safety .Pupils are learning about it in school and hopefully it's strongly reinforced at home so that we all have safe and happy holidays.
Junior Infant Teamwork
It is great to see the Junior Infant children come together to help each other. They are showing their awareness of becoming independent from their teacher.
Ag Rince
We had great fun dancing 'Shoe the donkey' to the song for 'Feach Ar An Asal'.
Jigsaw morning
The boys and girls do jigsaw activities every Thursday morning. Today the boys came together to work on a selection of 'Car' jigsaws.
Dancing makes us feel good.
We dance every Friday in the yard at lunch break. All the juniors move down to the Senior yard and we play boppy music on our mobile speakers. We also hold a Céilí Mór every year and practice our hAon, Dó, Trí sa halla on the days beforehand. Then we dress up in green outfits and dance all day. Ms Gemma teaches the WHOLE school the reel and Ionsa na hÍnse and other dances. We also have a huge disco in the yard at Hallowe'en. We all dress up for that! Some of the teachers dress up too!
Mountain walking together.
We really love going up the Sliabh Mish mountains. We spend the whole day walking and talking and looking at the fantastic scenery. We bring healthy snacks. Its always a great day.
New Sports
It's always good to give a new sport a try and we got the chance to try out the discus throw lately. It was tricky but fun and everyone got the hang of it fairly quickly.
Mindfulness
At times we need to pause and enhance our focus through different mindfulness exercises.
Participation in sport
James O Donoghue visited the school in January and talked to the children from fourth , fifth and sixth class about the physical health and mental health benefits of participation in sport.
Our Community.
We get lots of visits from our parents, grandparents and community. They teach us about charity, safety, social awareness good diets, local history and they always support our events. They help us keep the school tidy and clean and they like to help Ms Mary keep the school on the road. We all help each other and our parents are great. They come on school tours with us. They bring us to special places in Kerry. We all have great fun on Special Days, when they all come in to the school hall for special occasions. We also hold Hospice Coffee mornings and the Students council raised money for enable Ireland and for Trócaire after the terrible floods in Mozambique.
Creating a colourful and welcoming environment.
We love displaying our art and we love doing crafts, painting, making things. Here is a mural, painted by a former student, over a period of 5 days. All the children enjoyed watching the process. He explained to them that it's really important to do what you love and to follow your dreams. He dreamt of being an artist when he was a young boy here in school. Now its his job! Except it's not hard....he says it's fun and he loves it!
A kindness tree.
Focussing on kindness has been a theme for our 4th class who have been working really hard to 'catch' each other being kind. This concept works when the children focus on the kind deeds that are being done in school everyday, such as sharing equipment, holding a door open or including someone in a game etc. The children then secretly write down the act of kindness they see and share it with the teacher in our Kindness box. The teacher then writes the acts onto leaves for the tree and attaches them to the tree - so acts of kindness make the tree bloom! So far we have hundreds of acts of kindness recorded so our Kindness tree is in full bloom.
