Promoting Activity in our yard
The children are thrilled with these new playground stencils. Many thanks to our wonderful Parents Association for funding this resource.
Kennedy's Farm
Each year Juniors and Seniors visit Kenedy's Farm in Killarney. They've been in 2016/2017with Ms. Adrienne and are due to go again this June on their class tour. They went on a really long "Sheep Run"under bridges and ran forever up and down hills. They got to be very active again before lunch in the large indoor play area.
Wet yard days!
Here in Caherleaheen we don't let the rain come in our way when we want to get active! Our ASF committee along with the supervising teachers on yard do various exercises and fundamental movements with the children in each class. Its a great way to keep the children active even when the weather comes against us.
Encouraging all pupils to be more active
Rolling up our sleeves and putting on our wellies is a great way to get some exercise. Under the watchful eye of Mr. Liam and Ms. Mary the children get the opportunity to carry out various weeding and planting tasks during yard time. This is a great way to encourage children to get active particularly if they don't have interest in playground games.
Knockreer Tour 2016/17
Last year 3rd class visited Knockreer House and Gardens. We had a wonderful walkthrough the woods learning about all the nocturnal activity and over to the deer enclosure. Some needed more exertion so we had gymnastics before lunch!

Active Playground
As part of our Active Flag initiative children have been given access to the school's equipment at break and lunch times. They enthusiastically use the equipment in their play resulting in increased activity and fun during their breaks. The children have really enjoyed the creative and active play that has resulted from this small strategy.

Happy Runners: No Sweat!
We checked in with all the children this morning at 8:45am while they were lining up, to see how they managed their running during the weekend. The majority of children had completed their weekend jogs/runs. Some of the kids looked disappointed because they didn't run on Sat and Sunday. This is where parents come in :). Please help your child to catch up. Remember, they run for approx 6 mins max. at school each day. If your child needs to makeup a missing km please try to encourage them at home. They absolutely love it! Its a social thing too. They really enjoy running with others so maybe you could join them?
Trip to Bowling Buddies
6th class went on an outing to Bowling Buddies to put their bowling skills to the test following their Confirmation in April 2017. They were very impressive!

Dance Day Friday
April -Friday 13th unlucky for some, but not for Caherleaheen National School as the sun shone on a very enthusiastic bunch of pupils while they started their dancing days.We asked each class what kind of music they liked, screened it, and set our music schedule for the lunch time break in the playground.Pupils had the option of joining in or continuing with their free play. They came in their droves, though as soon as they heard the music start.Izzy,Holly,Sarah,Róisín and actually most of 4th class stood at the top of the yard and showed the younger ones how to do the Macrena. It was Superb!!!! Ps. Don't forget to get your dancing shoes on again for next Friday.
Here are some more photos of all our disco dancers at break time on Fridays...
Senior Infants Easter hop hunt
Senior infants enjoyed the fresh air as they bunny hopped all over the school yard. They worked together in pairs to complete the hop hunt using their task cards. Great fun was had by all!
Junior Infants at Crag Caves
Junior Infants had a fun day out when they visited Crag Caves. From bouncy balls to slippery slides, the children were exhausted at the end of the day. It was a quiet bus journey back to school!
Busy at the Beach.
We try to get to the beach every 'summer'! Ballyheigue is our number 1 choice. The tide must be out at 11am as we need to explore all the rock pools to see the goby fish, the crabs, anemones and numerous seaweeds. Then we stop for a healthy lunch. Our afternoon is spent playing rounders, long jump, soccer or building sandcastles and forts....feverishly and competitively!
Nature walks.
You can see from these photos that we have no shortage of opportunities to explore Mother Nature. We worked hard digging and turning soil before planting 30 trees!(one for each child) in Ballyseedy Woods. Nature walks on Ahern's Road and around our school, is a common activity and we know the rules of the road! Its a lovely 2km walk. And the children really love running through fields. Of course, our Town Park is an invaluable resource and classes are often brought there for nature walks.
Easter Hop Hunt
First class were busy hopping around the place the last time I saw them!!! Have our dear pupils changed into cute or lunatic bunnies??? As part of the orienteering strand of P.E. curriculum pupils had to visualise that they had magic powers and were able to fly,we explored what they would see from the ceiling...what shape the objects would be etc...So the pupils were first asked to draw a plan of what they would see.I ,then, did a plan of the classroom. Next step was the Hop Hunt. Here pupils were put in groups furnished with a very basic plan of the school and some numbers on a clipboard .They had to find what room each number was. They did an amazing job. They'll all get a well earned carrot when they hop back for term three.
