Caherleaheen wins Best Tralee School in Tralee Athletics Event
We won Best School for the second consecutive year last Thurs 24th May . Tralee Harriers hosts this multi-school event every year in Tralee. Caherleaheen pupils competed in 60m 80m 100m 200m and 600m races. Long jump , shot put and turbo javelin . But the big event for our school community was the Relay Competition! We had trained during our lunch breaks in the local Mitchells GAA pitch. We practiced our baton passing and receiving over and over again. On the night, we won six medals in the 6 relay races!! The atmosphere was electric. Our haul of medals in all the individual races was equally commendable and well deserved. BUT most memorable of all is the comradeship, the level of participation, the commiserations, the congratulations and of course the ultimate feeling of fun and achievement!
Our ASF notice board & suggestion box
Keep up to date with all things active by taking a look at our ASF notice board. Information such as why we should be more active, bizzy break movements and active lines can be seen on our board. You can take a quick peek at our very hard working ASF committee. You can also make any suggestions you have as to how we can be more active by popping them into our suggestion box . Our school loves to follow the slogan 'If you're fit you're lit'
Physical activity opportunities in the local area
The pupils of 6th class carried out a 'What club are you in' survey with the children in Caherleaheen. From this survey the children were able to gather information about physical activity opportunities in our local area. The pupils of 5th class then used this information to create a map of Tralee and pin point the exact location of the various physical activity providers. This map is located near our ASF notive board so both parents and pupils can take a look at all the various activities that take place in Tralee. Well done to the pupils of 5th and 6th class-great work!
Seeking advice!
Our school is in the privileged position to have Occupational Therapist Mary Rose Benner visiting our school each week. Mary Rose has passed on valuable advice and exercises to the teachers who in turn can integrate them into PE, classroom and yard time. We also sought the advice of Mary Corry from CARA to advise us as to how we can support children with special needs to ensure that everyone is included in PE and physical activity opportunities. We are very lucky to have collaboration with these professionals. Both pupils and teachers have benefitted greatly from the input of these professionals.

Primary School Sports
Every year some of our finest athletes and many more who have never tried competitive athletics, take part in the Primary School Sports. Every child from First to Sixth enjoy doing the trials. We make six relay teams, with plenty of subs. We also encourage solo athletes who like to run mid-distance solo races, such as 600m distances. Our school yard is too small, so we enjoy nothing better than the 1.5km walk to our nearest GAA pitch: Mitchell's. This gives us plenty of space. Last May, Caherleaheen won 'Best Tralee Primary School'. We were thrilled. We have dominated these inter-school races for more than a decade, despite our small numbers. Here are our “Active Achievers” from Schools Athetics,May 2017. Our trophy takes pride of place at our entrance.
In 2016/2017 these boys below got 3rd in Kerry in the relay event. They are Mark Talbot,Andrew Rogers,Tony White,Bobby Byrne and Cathal Murphy.Another athlete who deserves a mention here is the rocket that is Darragh Cunnane who got 1st place in Tralee in his solo running event.

Wow! What a day we had at the FAI 5-a-side competition earlier in the Park FC grounds. Caherleaheen had 2 teams taking part and for the first time ever we reached the county finals which will take place next Wednesday!! It was a superb day for all the children participating, with each team getting to play a full 5 games each! It was very blustery but that didn't deter our budding soccer stars and both teams really did the school proud - on and off the pitch. A huge well done to all the children, we are all looking forward to taking part in next week's county finals.
